Boxholm was platted in 1900 and incorporated in 1913. The town was named after Boxholm, Sweden and was originally settled by many people of Swedish decent. The population was over 300 at the 1950 census but has since dropped below 200.

The Boxholm Museum, owned by David Peterson, features many artifacts from the town and local schools.
